If not know, then when… it’s a powerful question isn’t it?
It may even be confronting.
If you are like me, this question has the potential to cut deep… it forces you to stop and think why…
Why is it that I don’t have in my life what I want? or
Why is it that I haven’t done what I said I would do? or
Why do I keep putting things off?
A number of years ago these are questions that I asked myself. I needed to understand why I was not achieving my goals and dreams at the rate I wanted.
Once I understood what was holding me back and what I needed to change, things began to happen, results became easier and I started to see progress…
…and this is what I want for you too.
There is nothing wrong with accepting that up until now you haven’t gotten the results you wanted. The key is to respond and move forward.
Now I am going to make the assumption that you want more out of life, you have things that you want to achieve but haven’t… YET!
If Not Now… Then When…
To get to the answer to this question, you need to consider what it is that prevents you from taking action…
Is there something holding you back?
From my experience there are many potential excuses or reasons. But there are a few that come up more often for most people.
The main excuses or reasons that I hear include:
- Fear of failure
- Family and friends
- I can’t do it
When I hear these excuses what I am really hearing are objections. These are objections that you have created for not taking action, or not having what you really want.
I get it, we all have these objections at some point in life… but it is how you respond that determines where you end up in life.
Fear of Failure
Fear is one of the most destructive emotions we endure…
It has the potential to paralyze and stop you completely.
But here is the thing. When it comes to what you want out of life, what are you afraid of?
It reminds me of a very famous quote, I may have used this before, from Marianne Williamson. This quote summarizes exactly how you need to manage the fear of failure.
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
The simple lesson of this quote is that you have the capability, you have the desire and you have an obligation to yourself to go after what you want.
And the beauty of going after what you want is the ripple effect it will have on those around you. By facing your fear of failure and sharing your brilliance with the world, you will empower others to do the same.
You have an obligation. That’s a powerful motivator right there.
Family and Friends
Family and friends can be your biggest fans and your biggest restriction.
The people you spend the most time with are known as your sphere of influence. The theory is that you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with…
If you are more concerned about fitting in than you are about your dreams, then this group will do a great job of helping you, FIT IN.
If you have read this far, I believe you are not someone who just wants to fit in.
The challenge for you therefore is to live your life by the mantra proposed by Marianne Williamson.
Stop living small!
Fitting in is not all that it is cracked up to be. In fact I know that the majority of people who are trying to fit in are more unhappy than you realise. If the people around you aren’t or won’t support your dreams, find new people to hang out with. SImple as that.
I Can’t Do It
It took me some time to realise what this statement is actually saying…
What you are really saying is, ‘tell me I can do it’, or ‘what if I can do it?’, or ‘I’m scared’.
Now there are some that might suggest that saying you can’t do something is just laziness, and they might be right.
However, I believe from my own personal experiences and those of the people I work with, that this excuse comes back to fear.
Successful people are no different to you or me. They have the same 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They have the same fears as you.
The difference is how they respond…
Crush Your Objections
The difference right now between you and someone who has had the success that you want is that they took ACTION.
There is a reasonably successful sporting goods company that has a slogan that I like to refer when my objections raise their head… JUST DO IT!
The quickest and easiest way to overcome your objections is to JUST DO IT.
Have you ever watched someone at the top of a bungy jump, stricken with fear, frozen to the point where they can’t move?
They want to jump, they chose to pay their money and get strapped in. Yet there they are ready for the big moment, and they can’t move.
Have you noticed how they normally overcome their fear? Yep, they just jump. Once they are in the air, all the fear just flows out of their body, they are free to enjoy the moment.
This can be you too…
Action is your outcome.
When it comes to wealth creation, action is the necessity. Delay of any type is costing you millions of dollars.
It is not the small amount of gain you lose this year by not taking action, it is the millions you lose in twenty or forty years that should concern you.
Let me explain.
If you are just starting out your returns in year one may only be small, maybe a few hundred dollars, or a few thousand… For example $10,000 earning 10% per annum is $1,000. In year two you now have $11,000 earning 10% or $1,100. So delaying action by one year cost you $100.
But, as you continue to build your wealth; in twenty years that one year delay in starting out could be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars… For example you now have $10,000,000 of assets earning 10% or $1,000,000. The following year it is $11,000,000 in assets earning 10% or $1,100,000.
That one year delay now just cost you $100,000 in twenty years time.
That’s a big deal.
I know you want more than you have right now, and it is likely you want it now. Heh we all have a bit of the Gen Y in us…
Wealth creation however is about action, about taking small steps day after day, month after month, year after year.
BUT it all comes back to facing your objections and taking action.
You have a choice, you can either stay where you are now for the rest of your life, or you can decide that today is the day that you change your circumstances for good.
If not now…then when?
Leave me a comment below; let me know what you are going to do this week to crush your objections.
